CHAPTER 11

Detective Chambers was gone for half an hour. The time was so long that they began to wonder if he was coming back, and then the door opened.

“Okay, the Lieu is putting a call in to a contact in the Treasury Department and we’ll see if we can get anywhere going around the Bureau.”

“When will you have an answer?”

“I’m hoping today, and if the planets align, in the next hour.”

“Okay, then have you gentlemen told us everything you know about this case? Did anything special come out of the locker—any pictures? We’ve gone through his military pictures and identified three suspects. Do you have any suspects on your list?” Jill asked.

“What do you mean, you’ve identified three suspects? How?” asked another detective who had been quiet up to that point.

“The threatening letters to Mr. Thomas refer to a friendship from his years of military service. We took the pictures of his time in the military which he kept in a separate box. We used facial recognition to identify his friends or company at the time he served. Then we looked into their backgrounds and were able to eliminate all of them except for three.”

“Wow. If your guesses are correct, then you’re further along than we are here. Give us the names and why you’ve identified them as a suspect,” Chambers said.

Jill wrote on the dry-erase board, while Marie explained their backgrounds.

“I don’t think I’ve given you the respect you deserve. My apologies,” said Chambers at the end of Marie’s explanation.

“Why don’t we locate these three suspects and interview them while we’re waiting for action from the higher-ups,” Chambers said as his detectives went to work finding a location for the men.

“Good idea. Are we finished talking about motives here?” Jill asked. “We gave you ours, but do you have any other ideas that we can research? Not to brag, but we’re really good at research.”

She heard nothing but silence, so she added, “Let’s catalog what we don’t know. Here’s my list: is there a missing plate at the Bureau, what’s the connection of this group to Melanie, what is the purpose of the 7% beyond making three executives rich, have you looked at every road camera to see if you can identify the food delivery person, is the end game strictly about making counterfeit money, what is going on with the Treasury security folks—do they belong to the 7%? What are your thoughts, detectives?” Two of the detectives had left to find the physical locations of the three men on Jill’s suspect list. They were left with Chambers and one other detective.

“I don’t know if we have enough information to examine a motive yet,” Chambers said as the other detective tried to be inscrutable.

“Sometimes identifying the motive helps you find the murderer,” Jill said. She looked at her watch and added, “My team departs for Wisconsin in three hours. I think we’ll return to our apartment and research the security personnel at the Bureau. Maybe that will help us figure out some of the picture behind this murder and the letter-writing.
